TheNewPaper NewFace 2014
It's probably mandatory to blog about the very special TheNewPaper NewFace 2014 since I am now a proud alumni member. I hope this helps those who are interested in taking part next year or in the future! If you want to do it, you should just do it. And don't stop trying until you get what you want.
I came into this competition, convicted, willing and determined to win it. However, towards the end of the competition just before the finals, after all the rehearsals, lessons, new friends, new people, you will realise that actually, you really don't mind not winning.
Experience was my greatest take I got from this competition, as well as exposure and connection. Joining these competitions really pushes you out of your comfort zone and subconsciously builds up your confidence. Confidence is a life skill.
How NewFace works is actually very simple. The alumnus go scouting every year, usually in June or July in search of new and fresh faces and give out passes for the "closed-door audition". If you do not get scouted, you can come for the walk-in audition, usually held publicly in shopping malls. 2014 was in Bugis+. 2013 was in Suntec City. From this walk-in audition, you get the same passes for the "closed-door audition".
In the closed-door audition, usually around 400 people were selected, then you'll have to do a catwalk, one by one in front of the judges, then they'll narrow down to probably about top 50, then top 25, then top 20 finalists.
Actually I audition for this last year too, NewFace 2013. But I didn't get in, only got into top 50. But I got in this year! And this year is apparently one of the tougher years. So last year, I didn't get in, this year is tougher, but I got in. This simply shows that for different years, they are looking for different type of models. The modelling industry is very subjective, just because you're not selected or casted, it doesn't mean that you're ugly or not good enough, it simply means that they just happen to be looking for something else.
People needs to understand this. Modelling isn't just only about being typically pretty. There are such terms as edgy, quirky, androgynous and those asian models with really small eyes. It's in fact about being different and being yourself.
And to people who commented stuff like, "no boobs" on some on the contestants' photos,
Sigh.
Never mind.
:'D
Personal opinion: I feel that what you need to get into this competition is really being confident and keep smiling. Seriously.
Here's the experience:
We got to walk for New Look and Levi's, and had photo shoots for them as well as Subaru.
M.A.C was our makeup sponsor and MONSOON was our hair sponsor.
We also got to travel to Bintan with the crew! I stayed overnight with the girls in the villa @ Bintan Lagoon Resort and we got to bond, it was really fun!
